NIGCOMSAT Sets Sights on N8 Billion Boost with Nationwide Broadband Push

The Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited (NIGCOMSAT) is aiming to generate over ₦8 billion in revenue as it intensifies efforts to expand broadband connectivity across the country, marking a significant step in Nigeria’s digital transformation agenda.

Speaking at a recent industry forum in Abuja, Managing Director and CEO of NIGCOMSAT, Mrs. Jane Egerton-Idehen, outlined the agency’s strategic focus on leveraging satellite infrastructure to bridge connectivity gaps, particularly in underserved rural and semi-urban regions.

“Our mission is to enable digital inclusion by extending reliable broadband access to areas that have long been neglected,” Egerton-Idehen said. “Through this expansion, we project revenue growth of at least ₦8 billion in the short to medium term.”

The move is part of NIGCOMSAT’s broader commercialization strategy aimed at optimizing the capabilities of its communications satellite, NigComSat-1R. The agency plans to partner with internet service providers, telecom operators, and government institutions to deliver cost-effective and secure broadband services nationwide.

Analysts say NIGCOMSAT’s renewed broadband drive could bolster Nigeria’s push to achieve 70% broadband penetration by 2027, a target set by the Nigerian National Broadband Plan. Current penetration stands at just over 45%, according to recent data from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

Industry stakeholders also note that satellite broadband holds the key to reaching communities beyond the reach of fiber optic infrastructure.

“The infrastructure deficit in remote areas makes satellite connectivity not just viable, but essential,” said Dr. Akin Oyebode, a telecom analyst. “NIGCOMSAT’s approach is timely, especially with the increasing demand for internet access in education, health, and e-governance.”

In addition to revenue generation, the broadband expansion initiative is expected to contribute significantly to job creation, tech innovation, and national security by enhancing data sovereignty and connectivity reliability.

NIGCOMSAT has also hinted at upcoming partnerships with private tech firms and regional governments to accelerate deployment, with pilot projects already underway in parts of the North Central and South East regions.

As the race to close Nigeria’s digital divide accelerates, NIGCOMSAT’s ambitious revenue target underscores the growing economic potential of the country’s satellite communication sector.
