The Edo State Internal Revenue Service (EIRS) has announced that it generated ₦52.6 billion in internally generated revenue (IGR) within the first six months of 2025 — a performance officials say reflects growing public compliance and improved digital tax administration.
The figure marks a significant boost to the state’s fiscal standing and puts Edo on track to exceed its annual revenue target if the current momentum is sustained.
“This performance is a result of strategic reforms, data-driven enforcement, and the expansion of our tax net,” said EIRS Executive Chairman, John Osagie Inegbedion. “We’re seeing more businesses voluntarily complying with their obligations.”
Key Drivers of Growth
The EIRS attributed the revenue growth to enhanced collections in the areas of Pay-As-You-Earn (PAYE), road taxes, levies from the hospitality and informal sectors, and improved automation of tax processes.
The agency also pointed to improved transparency and citizen engagement as critical factors contributing to rising confidence in the state’s fiscal framework.
Implications for Development
The revenue will bolster Edo’s ability to fund critical infrastructure, education, healthcare, and social services without excessive reliance on federal allocations.
“Internally generated revenue gives us the flexibility to pursue people-focused projects,” said Edo State Commissioner for Finance, Joseph Eboigbe.
Looking Ahead
The state government says it will continue to incentivize tax compliance and streamline its operations to ensure that residents and businesses experience minimal friction in fulfilling their obligations.
With its mid-year performance already outpacing several other sub-nationals, Edo is emerging as a model for sustainable state-level revenue generation in Nigeria.
