Telecommunications giant MTN Nigeria has called for the responsible and ethical use of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, emphasizing the need for robust governance frameworks as digital innovation accelerates across Africa.
Speaking at a recent tech industry forum in Lagos, MTN executives underscored the potential of AI to drive socioeconomic development but warned of its misuse if not properly regulated and ethically guided.
“AI is a transformative tool, but without accountability, inclusiveness, and transparency, it can deepen inequalities or even cause harm,” said Adia Sowho, Chief Marketing Officer at MTN Nigeria. “We believe in AI for good—technology that empowers, respects privacy, and upholds human dignity.”
MTN stressed the importance of collaboration between the private sector, government, and civil society to establish clear ethical standards, data privacy protections, and mechanisms to prevent algorithmic bias.
As AI tools become more integrated into customer service, financial systems, education, and healthcare, concerns around data security, surveillance, and misinformation have grown. MTN said it is proactively working to ensure its AI-driven services adhere to global best practices.
“We are investing not only in the technology itself but in the principles that guide its use,” Sowho added.
The company also announced plans to host a regional AI ethics symposium later this year, bringing together experts and regulators to chart a responsible path forward for AI in Africa.
MTN’s call comes amid global conversations about the risks and benefits of AI, with regulators in the EU, US, and several African countries moving to draft or implement AI governance policies.
