President Bola Tinubu has officially commissioned the 180-megawatt Afam II Power Plant, a significant infrastructure project aimed at enhancing Nigeria’s electricity generation capacity. The facility, situated in Oyigbo Local Government Area of Rivers State, was developed through a collaboration between Sahara Power Group and Crescendough Nigeria Limited.l
In a virtual address during the inauguration ceremony, President Tinubu lauded the project’s completion, describing it as a testament to Nigeria’s potential for overcoming challenges through collaboration and innovation. He emphasized that the addition of 180MW to the national grid is a pivotal step toward achieving stable and sustainable power supply across the country.
“This project exemplifies the enterprising Nigerian spirit and our collective capacity to deliver impactful solutions,” Tinubu stated. “The Afam II Power Plant is more than an infrastructure milestone; it’s a beacon of hope for our energy sector.”
The Afam II facility, completed within a 16-month timeframe, is expected to supply electricity to both industrial and residential areas, thereby stimulating economic growth and job creation. The plant’s development underscores the critical role of public-private partnerships in addressing Nigeria’s energy challenges
Kola Adesina, Group Managing Director of Sahara Power Group, highlighted the company’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions. “This milestone is more than the 180MW of additional power; we are celebrating impact, transformed lives, and the privilege we have as an organization to bring energy to life responsibly,” Adesina remarked.
The commissioning of the Afam II Power Plant aligns with the federal government’s broader objectives to enhance energy access and reliability, positioning Nigeria for increased industrialization and economic development.
