In a bold move to tackle the country’s housing deficit, the Federal Government has unveiled plans to construct 77,400 housing units across the country. The initiative, aimed at improving access to affordable housing and boosting local economies, was announced by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development.
According to the ministry, the new housing units will be spread across all six geopolitical zones, with a focus on urban and semi-urban centers. The project is expected to generate thousands of direct and indirect jobs, while providing modern and affordable homes to citizens.
“This ambitious plan is part of our broader strategy to meet the housing needs of Nigerians and stimulate economic growth,” said the Minister of Housing and Urban Development during a press briefing. “We’re engaging local contractors, suppliers, and skilled labor to ensure the project delivers both social and economic benefits.”
Experts have lauded the initiative, citing its potential to reduce the country’s housing gap, which currently stands at over 20 million units. However, they emphasize the need for transparent implementation and adherence to quality standards to ensure the project’s long-term sustainability.
The Federal Government has also pledged to prioritize low- and middle-income earners in the allocation of the housing units. A framework for mortgage financing and payment flexibility is reportedly in development to make the homes accessible to a wide range of Nigerians.
The groundbreaking for the first phase of the project is scheduled for later this year, with completion expected in stages over the next three years. Housing advocates and industry players are hopeful that this marks a new era of improved housing delivery in the country.
