Electricity Tariffs Under Review: Minister Signals Price Hike for Band B Customers

Nigerians under Band B electricity classification may soon pay higher tariffs, according to the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu.

Speaking in Abuja at the National Integrated Electricity Policy (NIEP) and Nigeria Integrated Resource Plan (NIRP) presentation on February 27, Adelabu argued that Band B consumers are currently underpaying compared to Band A customers, who receive a minimum of 20 hours of electricity daily.

Proposed Tariff Adjustments

  • The government may reduce consumer classifications to just three bands—A, B, and C.
  • Band B users, who currently receive up to 18 hours of power daily, could see tariff increases to align with their consumption levels.

While the proposal aims to balance electricity pricing, consumers have expressed concerns about affordability, given ongoing economic challenges.
