Vitel Wireless has entered into a new strategic partnership with two major Nigerian fintech firms, OPay Limited and Moniepoint Limited, to simplify the purchase of airtime and data services for millions of users across the country.
The collaboration allows customers of both fintech platforms to buy Vitel airtime and data directly from their wallets or linked bank accounts, removing the need for traditional recharge methods.
Expanding digital access across Nigeria
According to Vitel Wireless management, the partnership is aimed at improving access to mobile connectivity, particularly in rural and underserved communities where telecom services remain limited.
The company’s Chief Operating Officer, Chudi Nwabueze, said the initiative strengthens the link between financial technology and telecommunications, building on earlier integrations with commercial banks such as Fidelity Bank and Zenith Bank.
He explained that the new system will make it easier for users to top up airtime and purchase data bundles seamlessly through their fintech apps.
Boosting financial and digital inclusion
Vitel Wireless said the collaboration supports wider efforts to improve financial inclusion and digital access in Nigeria by combining telecom services with widely used digital payment platforms.
The company’s Product Marketing Manager, Odera Ben-Chiobi, noted that the goal is to “democratise access to mobile connectivity” and ensure more Nigerians can access essential communication services regardless of location.
Strengthening telecom infrastructure reach
Vitel Wireless, which operates using infrastructure shared with its host network partner MTN Nigeria, said the partnership will help extend reliable mobile services nationwide, especially in areas with weak connectivity.
Both OPay and Moniepoint, which have grown rapidly in Nigeria’s fintech ecosystem, are expected to use their extensive customer bases and agent networks to drive adoption of the service.
Industry observers say the collaboration reflects a growing trend of convergence between fintech and telecom sectors, aimed at improving access, convenience, and digital participation across the country.
