Zenith Bank PLC’s leadership has expressed admiration for the national Women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, following their triumph at the AfroBasket 2023, which concluded on Saturday in Rwanda.

In an exhilarating final match, Nigeria emerged victorious, besting Senegal with a score of 84-74 and securing the championship title for the third consecutive time.

D’Tigress achieved an impressive feat, securing four consecutive victories in the competition, further solidifying their status as a dominant force. With this win, Nigeria has matched the remarkable four consecutive wins achieved by the Senegalese women’s team.

Leading up to the final, D’Tigress showcased their prowess by defeating DR Congo 69-35, overpowering Egypt 83-65, outplaying Mozambique 59-52, and triumphing over the host nation, Rwanda, with a score of 79-48.

Ebenezer Onyeagwu, the Group Managing Director of Zenith Bank, expressed pride in D’Tigress’ accomplishments. Onyeagwu highlighted the team’s unwavering dedication in the competition, noting that several players are products of the national women’s league, a league that Zenith Bank has supported for over two decades.

“We are not surprised with the victory of D’Tigress, anytime they play, we look forward to receiving the trophy at our office as partners of the Nigeria Basketball Federation for the good of the game,” Onyeagwu said.

“The youthful girls were not given much chance to retain the title but they did in style, beating the host in the semis and the arch rivals, Senegal, in the final. We salute them and look forward to produce more talent for the country. We congratulate the team and the board of the NBBF led by Musa Kida.”

Meanwhile, the working committees of the NBBF have finalized the dates for the 2023 Women’s national league sponsored by Zenith Bank and the competition will take place on home and away bases in conference format.

The first phase is slated to hold between August 21st and 27th simultaneously in Jos and Akure. Jos is the venue for Savannah Conference while Akure will host the Atlantic Conference.

In the second phase, Lafia will host the Savannah Conference just as Asaba will host the Atlantic Conference between September 18th and 25th.

The two phases with eight teams in each conference will produce the final four teams that will travel to Lagos by the middle of October for the finals.
