The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned Governor Ben Ayade’s decision to continue with the annual Calabar Carnival after eight people died and 29 others were injured when a car lost control and crashed into a crowd of onlookers.

State Chairman of the PDP, Mr. Venatius Ikem, called the governor’s actions “inhuman, uncouth, and unperturbed by the sufferings of the masses,” and said they showed insensitivity to the mood and plight of the people.

He also pointed out that the tragedy could have been avoided if standard best practices for crowd and traffic control and participant safety had been followed. PDP governorship candidate Sen. Sandy Onor expressed condolences to the families of the victims and prayed for their souls and for strength to bear the loss.
