The Nigerian .ng domain name active user base has been on the rise for the past six months, from June to November 2022, as more Nigerians become aware of the importance of using the country’s official domain name in cyberspace. The Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NiRA), which manages Nigeria’s country code Top Level Domain (ccTLD), has reported that the total number of .ng domain name registrations increased from 181,275 in September 2022 to 183,169 in November 2022.

The latest statistics from the Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NiRA) show that while the total number of .ng domain name registrations increased from 181,275 in September 2022 to 183,169 in November 2022, the numbers are still low compared to the over 154 million active Nigerian internet users, many of whom operate online businesses. The statistics show that the increase in the number of registrations came from the active 2nd-level domain name users, which rose from 75,875 in September to 78,704 in October and then 81,607 in November 2022. Additionally, the statistics revealed that fresh registration of the .ng domain name in September was 6,781, renewal was 4,837, and restoration was 153. In October, fresh registration was 6,388, renewal was 4,773, and restoration dropped to 95. In November, fresh registration was 6,177, renewal was 4,861, and restoration was 101.

The .ng domain name, Nigeria’s country code Top Level Domain (ccTLD), serves as the country’s identity in cyberspace and is used as the suffix for all official email addresses originating from Nigeria. Similarly, the United Kingdom uses .co.uk, the United States uses .com, and South Africa uses .co.za for their official email addresses.

To raise awareness about the importance of using the .ng domain name, the Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NiRA) has conducted various campaigns. In response to the increase in active .ng domain name users in September, October, and November 2022, the President of NiRA, Mr. Mohammed Rudman, stated that Nigerians are starting to understand the need to associate their online transactions and communications with the .ng domain name.

In his New Year message for 2023, the President of NiRA, Mr. Mohammed Rudman, highlighted the increasing adoption of .ng domain names among Nigerian internet users. He praised the organization’s efforts to promote awareness about the importance of using .ng as the country’s identity in cyberspace and stated that these efforts have led to a steady increase in active .ng domain name users from June to November 2022. Rudman also emphasized that NiRA’s main objective is to promote the stability, security, and reliability of the .ng domain name and that the organization will continue to engage with stakeholders across Africa and the world to achieve this goal. He expressed excitement for the opportunities and progress that 2023 holds for the growth of the .ng domain.
