Ogun State — The National Rescue Movement (NRM) Ogun State Chapter has condemned what it describes as the government’s alleged attempt to undermine citizens’ constitutional right to protest. The group has criticized the Federal Government for purportedly sponsoring protests against those exercising their democratic rights.

In a statement issued on Friday, acting state Chairman Olujobi Fayoyin denounced the government’s actions as reckless and inhumane. He pointed out the irony that current officials, who once protested against the status quo, are now reportedly suppressing public dissent.

“It is very reckless and inhumane for the government to sponsor a protest against those who want to exercise their civic rights as bona fide Nigerians who have a constitutional right to protest,” Fayoyin said. “It shows that the government is not ready to listen to people, and whatever happens at the end of this protest will be a result of what the government has orchestrated against the protesters.”

Fayoyin emphasized that government officials who previously protested against injustices should not now attempt to sabotage public demonstrations. He argued that such actions betray the citizens’ trust and are contrary to democratic principles.

“Whoever in government is doing this does not have love for the masses, and such persons should not be given a second chance if they are out for a political campaign,” he added.

The NRM called on the government to adhere to democratic principles by listening to the people’s grievances and engaging in meaningful dialogue rather than resorting to force. Fayoyin urged all politicians to genuinely serve the people and restore faith in Nigeria’s political system.

“Anyone who wants to serve in government must be ready to listen to the people and must do their will since democracy is a government of the people, by the people, and for the people,” he said.

Fayoyin also called on the President and state governors to communicate with the public in a manner that fosters understanding, rather than resorting to displays of force.

This condemnation comes amid reports of clashes during the August 1st protests, where some demonstrators were reportedly attacked by individuals allegedly sponsored to disrupt the protests.
