In a strategic move to empower Nigerian women and youth in the digital age, Google has unveiled plans to train a staggering 20,000 individuals in digital skills. Additionally, the tech giant has committed a substantial grant of 1.2 billion naira ($1.6 million) to collaborate with the government in fostering the creation of one million digital jobs within the nation.
The announcement was made by Google Africa executives during a pivotal meeting in Abuja, where Vice President Kashim Shettima highlighted Nigeria’s vision of generating digital employment opportunities for its burgeoning youth population. While specific timelines for the job creation initiative were not disclosed, it is poised to align with the government’s ongoing efforts to enhance youth participation in the digital economy.
Google’s philanthropic arm, in partnership with Data Science Nigeria and the Creative Industry Initiative for Africa, will play a vital role in facilitating the training and job creation program. Furthermore, the collaboration extends to the involvement of Nigeria’s banking sector, amplifying the potential impact of this ambitious endeavor.
Olumide Balogun, Google’s director for West Africa, emphasized the company’s commitment to nurturing digital skills among women and young individuals in Nigeria. During the meeting, Charles Murito, Google Africa’s director of government relations and public policy, underlined Google’s broader dedication to bolstering digital infrastructure across Africa.
