Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has publicly criticized President Bola Tinubu for his handling of fuel subsidy removal, arguing that the policy has exacerbated economic hardships for Nigerians. In a recent post on X, Atiku, the 2023 presidential candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), referred to Tinubu as “T-Pain,” suggesting that the president is indifferent to the struggles facing the populace.

Atiku stated, “The haphazard and disingenuous approach of the current administration to fuel subsidy management has been the reason we are in this current economic crisis in the country.” He further warned that the ongoing inflation rate is eroding the material well-being of citizens, highlighting a troubling disconnect between the government and the realities faced by Nigerians.

The criticism comes on the heels of a significant increase in petrol prices announced by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), which has prompted panic-buying among motorists. In Lagos, petrol prices surged to ₦998 per litre, a rise of approximately ₦150 from the previous price of ₦855. Many other filling stations quickly followed suit, with prices reaching as high as ₦1,050 across the city. In Abuja, NNPCL outlets increased petrol prices from ₦897 to ₦1,030.

The price hikes have led to long queues at filling stations, raising concerns about the impact on transport costs and the overall economy. Atiku’s remarks reflect growing frustration among Nigerians regarding the government’s economic policies and their tangible effects on daily life.
