AFEX, a leading Pan-African commodities player, has recently released its second impact report, outlining its activities over the past five years.

Since its establishment in 2014, the company has engaged with over 500,000 farmers and facilitated trades exceeding 1,000,000 metric tons. Building upon the publication of its inaugural impact report in 2021, AFEX has intensified its efforts to drive positive change in Africa’s commodities markets, aligning with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 1, 2, 5, 8, 12, and 13.

The latest report presents an updated version of AFEX’s theory of change (ToC), initially introduced in 2021, along with an expanded focus on its contributions to Climate Action (SDG 13). This comprehensive approach addresses the pressing challenges posed by climate change, which significantly impact agricultural productivity across Africa.

With floods, droughts, and erratic rainfall patterns threatening farmer livelihoods and exacerbating food insecurity, AFEX is dedicated to promoting sustainable, climate-resilient agriculture on the continent. By enhancing farmers’ access to certified seeds, quality fertilizers, and essential services like extension and storage facilities, AFEX aims to bolster food security and alleviate rural poverty.

According to the report, rural poverty in Nigeria has worsened compared to baseline measurements in 2020, underscoring the urgent need for interventions. AFEX operates in Nigeria and Kenya, where it concentrates its efforts on uplifting farming communities and fostering economic opportunities.

Ayodeji Balogun, CEO of AFEX, emphasized the company’s commitment to inclusive growth and sustainability, stating, “Our impact goals are essential as we grow our business and expand, as it ensures that we are able to build a commodities market that is as inclusive as it is efficient.”

Akinyinka Akintunde, President of AFEX Nigeria, highlighted the report as a milestone in the company’s journey towards sustainability and responsibility. He reiterated AFEX’s dedication to creating a robust marketplace for commodities in Africa, driven by shared prosperity and transformative agricultural practices.

As challenges in the commodities market are compounded by the effects of climate change, comprehensive efforts are essential to drive sustainable value creation. AFEX remains steadfast in its mission to improve livelihoods, ensure food quality, and promote well-functioning markets across Africa.

AFEX operates as a platform business, facilitating efficient commodity trading across the continent.
