FG Expands Crude Evacuation Network with 37 New Routes; Oil Rigs Surge to 44

The Federal Government has announced the addition of 37 new crude oil evacuation routes across the country, alongside an increase in active oil rigs to 44, signaling a significant boost in Nigeria’s upstream oil sector capacity.

This development aims to enhance the efficiency of crude transportation, reduce bottlenecks, and increase overall production output as the nation seeks to optimize its oil sector amid global market demands.

“Expanding evacuation routes is crucial to ensure uninterrupted flow from oil fields to export terminals,” said the Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Zainab Ahmed, during a briefing in Abuja on Wednesday. “Coupled with the rise in drilling activities, these steps will strengthen Nigeria’s position as a leading oil producer.”

Strategic Growth Amid Industry Challenges

The increase in operational rigs reflects renewed investment and exploration activities, driven by improving oil prices and government incentives targeting local content and sector reform.

Industry analysts suggest that these measures are designed to offset production losses from sabotage and pipeline vandalism that have historically plagued Nigeria’s oil infrastructure.

Impact on Production and Revenue

The expanded crude evacuation infrastructure is expected to alleviate pressure on existing pipelines and terminals, reducing delays and losses. This is anticipated to enhance export volumes and government revenue.

“With more routes and rigs in operation, Nigeria could see a steady climb in output towards its OPEC quota of 1.8 million barrels per day,” said energy economist Dr. Michael Okoro.

Security and Environmental Concerns

The government also stressed the importance of strengthening security around these new routes to prevent illegal bunkering and pipeline attacks.

Environmental safeguards will be prioritized to minimize ecological impact, with strict monitoring frameworks planned for all evacuation corridors.

As Nigeria looks to regain its footing in the global oil landscape, the combination of infrastructure expansion and increased drilling activities signals a proactive approach to revitalizing the sector.
