Stakeholders Commend Jigawa’s N19.6 Billion Affordable Housing Initiative

A coalition of housing advocates and development stakeholders has praised the Jigawa State Government’s N19.6 billion investment in affordable housing, calling it a bold step toward addressing shelter deficits and stimulating local economic growth.

The project, which aims to deliver hundreds of housing units across key urban and semi-urban areas of the state, is being hailed as one of the most ambitious social infrastructure efforts undertaken in the region in recent years.

According to a statement released by the advocacy group, Shelter for All Network, the initiative aligns with national goals of reducing homelessness, improving living conditions, and promoting inclusive development.

“This is more than a housing project—it’s a socioeconomic investment,” said Dr. Hadiza Umar, spokesperson for the group. “Jigawa’s commitment is commendable and should serve as a model for other states battling similar housing challenges.”

The state government disclosed that the N19.6 billion will fund not only the construction of homes but also essential amenities including access roads, electricity, and water supply. The move is expected to create jobs and empower local contractors and artisans, thereby boosting the state’s economy.

Governor Umar Namadi reaffirmed his administration’s resolve to ensure the project is completed on schedule, emphasizing transparency and community engagement throughout the process.

Housing experts believe the project could significantly bridge the housing gap in Jigawa, where demand has long outpaced supply, particularly among low- and middle-income earners.

“This initiative will not only transform the urban landscape of Jigawa but also uplift the lives of thousands of families,” Dr. Umar added.

The first phase of the project is expected to be completed by early 2026.
