APM Terminals has announced a $60 million investment aimed at transforming Onne Port in Rivers State into Nigeria’s first fully green port.
The funding will be channeled into eco-friendly infrastructure, clean energy adoption, and advanced operational technology designed to reduce carbon emissions and improve environmental sustainability.
According to the company, the initiative aligns with its global commitment to decarbonization and will position Onne as a leader in green maritime operations within Africa.
The Managing Director of APM Terminals Nigeria, Frederik Klinke, said the project demonstrates the company’s confidence in the Nigerian economy and its readiness to support the federal government’s drive for sustainable industrial growth.
He noted that the transformation of Onne Port would not only boost trade efficiency but also create opportunities for green jobs while ensuring compliance with international environmental standards.
Industry experts have described the move as a major milestone in Nigeria’s quest to modernize its seaports and reduce dependence on fossil fuel-powered operations.
