Nigeria Records 560,000 Tonnes of Fertiliser Imports in 2025

Nigeria imported a total of 560,000 tonnes of fertiliser inputs in 2025, according to new figures released by industry regulators.

The imports, officials said, were driven by rising demand from farmers and agro-industrial players seeking to boost crop yields amid government calls for greater agricultural productivity.

Data obtained from the Fertiliser Producers and Suppliers Association of Nigeria (FEPSAN) indicated that the bulk of the inputs included urea, phosphate, and potash, which are critical components for blending locally.

Speaking on the development, a senior official at FEPSAN explained that while Nigeria has made significant strides in domestic production, imports remain necessary to meet shortfalls and ensure farmers have timely access to quality fertilisers.

“Agriculture is central to Nigeria’s food security goals, and fertiliser supply is key. The imports complement local production and help bridge gaps, especially during the planting season,” the official said.

Analysts, however, noted that the reliance on imports underscores the need for greater investment in local fertiliser plants and raw material processing, which could reduce foreign exchange pressure and strengthen the agricultural value chain.

The development comes as the Federal Government reiterates its commitment to supporting farmers with subsidies and improved access to inputs under its food security agenda.
