Producers Insist Rising Farm Costs Keep Food Prices High

Nigerian farmers have cautioned that consumers should not expect a significant drop in food prices unless the cost of production is reduced.

Speaking through various associations, the farmers noted that high expenses on inputs such as fertilizer, seeds, agrochemicals, and transportation continue to drive market prices upward, despite recent government efforts to stabilize the food sector.

“Food prices are not high because farmers want to exploit consumers. They are high because the cost of producing and transporting these items is rising daily,” a spokesperson for a northern farmers’ cooperative said.

They stressed that until government interventions address rising fuel prices, poor infrastructure, and insecurity in farming communities, food costs will remain elevated.

Agricultural experts add that inflationary pressures on basic farm inputs, coupled with exchange rate fluctuations, have worsened the situation, leaving little room for price relief.

The warning comes at a time when food inflation remains one of the biggest contributors to Nigeria’s rising cost of living, putting millions of households under strain.
