Customs Generates N859bn, Intercepts N200bn Worth of Contraband in Port Harcourt

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Port Harcourt Area Command, has announced a revenue haul of ₦859 billion while also seizing contraband goods valued at over ₦200 billion within the year under review.

According to the Comptroller of the command, the impressive revenue performance was achieved through stricter enforcement, improved compliance by importers, and the deployment of technology in cargo processing.

The seized items, which included banned goods and smuggled products, were described as part of the Service’s ongoing efforts to safeguard the nation’s economy and protect local industries.

“We remain committed to curbing smuggling activities, boosting revenue, and ensuring legitimate trade thrives in line with our mandate,” the Comptroller stated.

Stakeholders have lauded the command’s efforts, noting that the results reflect the broader push by the Customs Service to increase revenue generation for the Federal Government despite economic headwinds.

Analysts, however, stress the need for sustained reforms in port operations to reduce leakages, enhance efficiency, and create a more business-friendly environment for legitimate traders.
