UK Approves $120m to Tackle Global Food Insecurity

The United Kingdom has approved a fresh funding package exceeding $120 million aimed at bolstering global food security, particularly in vulnerable regions grappling with hunger, climate shocks, and conflict-induced food crises.

The announcement was made during a high-level summit on global development held in London on Monday, where UK officials reaffirmed their commitment to supporting sustainable agriculture, improving nutrition, and building resilient food systems.

The aid will be channeled through international development partners, including the World Food Programme (WFP)Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and other trusted humanitarian agencies.

“We are witnessing a dangerous rise in global hunger. This funding is a critical step to address immediate needs and invest in long-term solutions,” said Andrew Mitchell, UK Minister for Development and Africa.

According to the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), the funding will target food-insecure regions in Africa, the Middle East, and parts of Asia, where millions are at risk of starvation due to drought, conflict, and economic instability.

The package will support emergency food relief, promote climate-smart agriculture, and improve food supply chains in regions hit hardest by the global food crisis exacerbated by the war in Ukraine and rising global inflation.

“This is not just aid; it’s an investment in stability, human dignity, and global security,” Mitchell added.

Global food security experts welcomed the move, urging other donor countries to increase their contributions as global hunger levels hit record highs.

The UN estimates that over 735 million people faced hunger in 2023, with sub-Saharan Africa and parts of the Middle East experiencing the steepest rises in food insecurity.
